Parables

In this series, we will be looking at just a few of the parables Jesus used to illustrate His teaching and to make a point. The Greek word for parable is “paraballo” (παραβαλλω), a compound of two very vivid words: “para-“, which means beside or alongside, and “-ballo”, which means to throw. So, to teach by a parable is literally to throw a lesson alongside the true object of the teaching. I.E., the teacher illustrates this point by describing that point.

But Jesus would often conclude His parables with a certain saying, “He who has ears, let him hear!” Jesus was saying that it’s not enough for His words to enter your ears, or even your heart; it’s what you do with them that counts.
